The first day of a new job can be a nerve-racking experience. You may not know exactly what to expect going into it, and this can lead to high levels of stress. On top of that, it’s a day that usually involves meeting many new people, and you’re probably anxious to make a good impression. So how can you best prepare for your first day on the job? Make sure to bring these five things with you.
A notebook and pen
You’ll likely be doing a lot of on-the-job learning your first few days—or even weeks—of work, so bring something to take notes with.
When you ask a question, write down the answer you receive in a notebook so you don’t forget it. You could also write down the tips you receive from coworkers, notes on company policies, and areas where you want to focus on improving. In doing this, you’ll essentially be creating a personalized little employee handbook for yourself that could prove to be useful not just in your first few weeks, but far later down the line as well.
A notebook is also a good item to bring with you because it sends a message to your manager and fellow coworkers. When you show up organized and ready to take notes, it tells the people around you that you’re willing to put in the work, learn, and better yourself.
Any necessary documents
The first day of any job typically entails filling out paperwork, completing things for HR, and onboarding. Perhaps the HR department at your new company already informed you about the necessary items and documents to bring to your first day of work. If they told you about this over email, then it’s a good idea to print out the email, review it carefully, and make a checklist so that you don’t forget anything.
If you’re unsure about what to bring, don’t be afraid to reach out to the HR department in advance of your first day and ask. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry. At the very least, though, you should bring two forms of identification in on your first day. Keep your driver’s license and passport close by just in case you need them.
A sharp outfit
Maybe you already met one or two people at your new company during the interview process, but on your first day you’ll be meeting the rest of your coworkers and, as they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
With this in mind, it’s better to overdress than underdress your first day in the office. Does this mean you should put on a tuxedo? No, it doesn’t—all it means is that you should dress in business casual attire at the very least. Try wearing a collared shirt and a blazer with some slacks.
Of course, you should also consider the culture, and possibly dress code, of the new company. The way you dress usually depends on the type of job you’re starting. How you’re expected to dress while working at a law firm, for instance, is most likely going to be much different than the expectations at a shipping warehouse.
A watch
Wearing a nice watch on your first day is an easy way to make a memorable first impression. There are plenty of men’s dress watches out there that can add a touch of class and professionalism to any outfit.
It’s also an accessory that serves a practical purpose, especially in the workplace. Maybe your company doesn’t allow phones to be out during work hours, or you’re around customers all day and can’t easily whip out your phone to check the time.
With a watch on, you can just glance down at your wrist, which can end up making your time management at work much more efficient. It can help you keep track of meetings, determine when to take your lunch break, and just generally stay on schedule throughout the day.
A water bottle
Want to do great work on your first day? Then drink a lot of water. Staying hydrated throughout the day is essential to performing at peak capacity, both mentally and physically.
Water also provides you with the energy you need to get through the work day. Studies have shown that even mild dehydration can have a negative impact on mood, focus, and brain function.
Preparation is a key part of battling stress. The more organized you are, the less uncertainty you have to face at your new job. That’s why you should come prepared with all of the essentials you need, so that you start off on a good foot and lay the foundation for future success.
